Electric car recovery: flatbed drivers who can carry an EV

Electric and hybrid cars shouldn't be towed on their wheels. Tell us it's electric and we only show it to suitable trucks.

Why EVs need care

Many electric cars generate power when their wheels turn, so towing on the driven wheels can damage the motor. A flatbed or wheel dollies are the usual answer, and the extra battery weight matters for the truck.

How we help

  • Mark the vehicle as electric or hybrid when you post.
  • Only drivers whose truck can carry the weight see the job.
  • Say if the car is out of charge, as a transport mode may be needed.

Questions

Can an electric car be towed?

Most manufacturers say it should be carried on a flatbed. Check your handbook, and tell the driver the make and model.

What if the battery is flat?

Many EVs have a transport mode that frees the wheels. It usually needs the 12-volt battery to have some charge.
