Moving a non-runner: what the recovery driver needs to know
A car that won't start, won't steer or won't roll needs different equipment. Here's what to tell the driver so the right truck turns up.

The questions that matter
- Do the wheels turn? A seized brake, flat tyres or a car stuck in gear means it can't be rolled, so the driver needs a winch and dollies (skates).
- Does the steering work? If not, it can't be guided onto the truck.
- Are the keys with it? Without keys the steering lock may be on.
- Is it a 4x4, an automatic or electric? These usually can't be towed with two wheels on the ground.
- Where exactly is it? A multi-storey car park, a narrow lane or a garage with a low roof changes what truck can get to it.
Before the truck arrives
- Take your belongings out, and anything that could move around.
- Note any existing damage, and take your own photos too.
- If someone else is meeting the driver, make sure they have the keys and know where it's going.
