Recovery
Recovery usually means the vehicle is lifted or driven onto a truck and carried. It protects the transmission, the steering and the tyres, and it suits non-runners, automatics, electric cars and anything damaged.
Towing
Towing means pulling a vehicle along on at least some of its own wheels, with a tow bar, tow rope or an A-frame. It's used for short distances and for vehicles that can safely roll. Many automatic and electric cars can be damaged if towed, so check the handbook first.
Which should you choose?
- Not sure? Choose carried on a truck.
- Electric, hybrid or automatic: a flatbed is usually the safe choice.
- Long distance: carrying is gentler on the vehicle and often no slower.
